October 16 to 22 is Teen Read Week™ and the theme for Teen Read Week  is “Picture It! @ your library.”  This  is a great one  because it includes so much!  You can read about movies, photography, cartooning or even a graphic nove like mangal.  If uou can read it, you can picture it!

So, don’t forget to read a book for Teen Read Week™ and check out the media center!  We have lots of new books on display!

 We need to give special thanks to Mr. Berman for his support and encouragement.  Also, the 2010-2011 Media Committee was extremely helpful by assisting and guiding us through the application process.  They were our biggest cheerleaders!  Thank you to Mrs.  Lolley, Mr.  Wilson, Mrs. Brown, Mrs.  Meeks,  Mrs. Blalock, Mrs. Flynn, Mr. Baldwin, Ms.  Selden, Mr. Farist, Mrs. Lauletta (parent member), and Mary Catherine  (student member).

 The Annual Exemplary/Exceptional Library Media Program selects two schools on each level based on how well their library media program meets school improvement goals and improves student achievement.  Peer Library Media Specialists and GaDOE staff select the recipients based on the school’s written application, the principal’s narrative, a possible telephone interview, and a probable on-site visit. 

Another part of winning this recognition is presenting our media program along with the elementary, middle and one other high school exemplary programs at the GaETC Conference in November.  Our media center will also host an open house sometime in the 2011-12 school year for the public and other schools/districts to visit.  Stay tuned for more information!

Today is  international Tolkien Reading Day. The Sequoyah Media Center is proud to have retired SHS teacher and friend, David Cofield as our guest reader today in the media center.  Mr. Cofield will speaking all seven periods to several classes at a time.  He will be presenting information about the life and writings of J.R.R. Tolkien, playing a passage of Tolkien reading (an old LP), reading a passage from Lord of the Rings, and then showing the same read passage from the movie.

Tolkien Reading Day started in 2003 and March 25 was chosen as the day because the is the day the ring was destroyed and is the downfall of Sauron.  You can find out more about this day here.
